The festival traces back to centuries, and is celebrated by the people of Ga-Dangme to commemorate the arrival and settlement of their ancestors in Ghana from their ancient migratory journeys. The name, HOMOWO, literally means “hooting at hunger”. HOMOWO has now become the major annual festive season among the Gadangme community both in Ghana and in the diaspora. Participants of this year’s Homowo Festival are delegates from nearly all Gadangme Associations and affiliates in continental North America including Canada, Europe and Ghana.
