Toronto, ON — August 23, 2025 — In a momentous celebration of African and Ghanaian heritage, the City of Toronto officially renamed the iconic Dundas Square to Sankofa Square, a name inspired by the Akan word “Sankofa” from Ghana, meaning “go back and reclaim it”. The renaming ceremony, held on August 23rd, 2025, marked a historic milestone in recognizing the contributions of Ghanaian-Canadians and the wider African community to the city’s rich cultural identity.
The celebration highlighted the Ghanaian community’s role in shaping Toronto’s multicultural landscape. Members of the community, including local chiefs, Queen Mothers, cultural leaders, and friends of Ghana, gathered alongside dignitaries, city officials, and residents to witness this groundbreaking moment.

This historic collaboration between the City of Toronto and the Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) was spearheaded by the Ghanaian-Canadian Association of Ontario under the leadership of their President Mr Emmanuel Duoudu, and strongly supported by the Ghana Consulate Office in Toronto.

The ceremony was further elevated by the presence of two high-profile Ghanaian government officials who traveled from Ghana to attend:
-
Hon. James Gyakye Quayson, Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs
-
Hon. Dzifa Gomashie, Ghana’s Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture
Their attendance underscored the global significance of this event, symbolizing a strong bond between Ghana and its diaspora community in Canada.
The ceremony featured traditional Ghanaian cultural performances, drumming, dancing, and symbolic rituals led by Ghanaian chiefs and queen mothers, creating a vibrant showcase of Ghana’s rich heritage. Speeches were delivered by Mr. Emmanuel Duodu and the visiting ministers, reflecting on the importance of preserving African history, reclaiming cultural identity, and celebrating diversity in Toronto.
Sankofa Square will now stand as a lasting symbol of unity, resilience, and cultural pride, honoring the past while inspiring future generations of Ghanaians and African-Canadians in Toronto.
